Discuss HB2627/PA 101-487 with Local Law Enforcement

As you are working to educate school personnel on various recent legislation, please remember to also share PA 101-487 with your local law enforcement, including both your school resource officer(s) and the leadership in county and municipal law enforcement agencies. When conflicts arise between school officials and law enforcement, it generally arises from a lack of communication and preparation for specific situations.

PA 101-487 puts limits on when and how the police can detain and question a student at school, including the requirement for parental notification, a role for school social workers/counselors, and recommended training for any law enforcement interacting with youth at school, including when they are detaining and questioning students suspected of having committed a crime.

It would be prudent to have a discussion with your law enforcement agencies regarding this change in the law, and also likely include and update this change in the law in your memorandum of understanding with local law enforcement - recommended after the changes in the School Code and student discipline brought about as a result of SB100.
